I'm first attracted by appearances such as dark hair, dark eyes, and darker skin (than mine, but *all* shades of color are really appealing to me), I tend to prefer younger (up to about 42), thin or slim, or average, or athletic. Beyond looks, I check to see if a person is humane, knows his social skills, has a bit of wisdom and perhaps education, and maybe a sense of whether the person is an "old soul." And of course the usual boy-scout things: honest, trustworthy, loyal, etc. etc etc., lol!
